International News: Pakistan’s Army Chief and Field Marshal General Asim Munir officially completed his tenure as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) on 29 November. He was expected to take over the newly created post of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) immediately after that. However, no formal notification has been issued yet, raising questions about why the country’s most powerful military position has not been handed over despite parliamentary and presidential clearance.
General Munir’s three-year tenure as COAS ended late on 29 November, following which his appointment as CDF was anticipated. The Shehbaz Sharif government created the new role through a constitutional amendment intended to increase his authority. But the absence of an official appointment so far has caused growing speculation about his current status and possible internal disagreements.
Reports suggest that the mandatory notification is yet to be signed. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif dismissed rumours and clarified that the process of issuing the notification for CDF has already begun. He said on social media that there is no scope for speculation and that the appointment will be completed at the appropriate time once procedures are finished.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is currently in the United Kingdom and is expected to return shortly. Officials say the notification may be approved after his arrival, followed by a formal command ceremony next week. Sources indicate that the delay appears to be administrative rather than political or strategic in nature.
The recent constitutional amendment replaced the post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee with CDF. With this change, General Munir is expected to take supreme command of all three armed forces as well as the National Strategic Command. Analysts say the position will make him the most powerful uniformed official in Pakistan’s defence structure.
Officials insist that there is no challenge to his elevation and the delay is merely technical. They state that both Parliament and the President have already approved the amendment, clearing all legal hurdles. According to defence experts, the notification is expected soon and does not reflect any opposing stand within the government.
Once appointed as CDF, Asim Munir would become the top authority in Pakistan’s defence command system. This move would grant extended operational powers and reinforce the military’s strategic leadership under his command. The upcoming decision is being closely watched, as it could mark one of the most significant shifts in Pakistan’s power hierarchy in recent times.
